Visa and Entry Requirements for International Visitors

We’re excited to welcome you to Johannesburg for the upcoming meeting! To help you prepare for your trip, here are key travel and entry requirements for international visitors.

The information on this page is provided for general guidance only and does not constitute legal or travel advice. Visa, entry and health requirements are subject to change and may vary depending on your nationality and circumstances. We strongly recommend checking with the South African Department of Home Affairs or your local South African embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date and official information before you travel.

Visa Requirements

Check your specific visa requirements on the South African Department of Home Affairs website.

  • Visa-exempt countries include many in Africa, the EU, and parts of Asia and the Americas.
  • Travelers from visa-required countries must apply for a visa before arrival.

If a visa is required:

  • Apply in advance through the nearest South African embassy or consulate.
  • Tourist or business visas are typically valid for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Fill out the invitation letter request form below if you need a personalized invitation letter.

Passport Validity

Make sure your passport meets the following criteria:

  • Valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure from South Africa.
  • Includes two blank consecutive pages for stamps (not endorsement pages).

Travelers without sufficient validity or pages may be denied entry.

Health and Vaccination Requirements

Traveling with Children

South Africa enforces specific rules for minors (under 18):

  • If you are traveling with just one parent or unaccompanied, then you may need a full birth certificate and written parental consent.
  • Requirements vary by situation—check details on the Home Affairs website.

Arrival Tips

  • Most international flights arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg.
  • Allow time for customs and immigration clearance, especially during peak travel periods.
  • Taxis and rideshare options are available at the airport. Pre-booked transport or hotel shuttles are recommended for convenience.

Travel Advisories

Several countries have issued travel advisories for South Africa due to concerns about crime, civil unrest and other safety issues. While Johannesburg remains a popular destination, it's important for travelers to be aware of potential risks and take appropriate precautions. Guidance varies by country, so please consult your government’s official travel advisory website before you travel for specific information.
