Advocating for Science and the Environment

As the U.S. political landscape evolves, SETAC remains steadfast in its advocacy for science, environmental protection and inclusivity in the scientific community. SETAC is working tirelessly – both publicly and behind the scenes – on initiatives that have the greatest potential for impact.

Advocating for Science and the Environment

For research funding: In collaboration with more than 600 fellow scientific societies, SETAC co-signed a letter to the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, advocating for continued investment in science and evidence-based policymaking. Additionally, SETAC signed a letter from the American Institute of Biological Science (AIBS), the institution that supported SETAC’s founding – also advocating for science funding.

For the environment: On 25 February, the Federal Register published a proposal to significantly weaken the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)—a cornerstone of American environmental protection since 1969. There is a 30-day public comment period. SETAC is preparing comments. We also encourage members to review the proposed changes.

How Members Can Take Action

SETAC encourages member action:

  • Advocate directly. Reach out to your elected officials. Use this editable email that includes a link to the big sign-on letter. You can also call them directly. When talking to policymakers, consider highlighting talking points such as job loss, economic impacts, and the health and wellbeing of the public. For a listing of elected officials, see Congress.gov.
  • Engage with the scientific community. Connect with fellow SETAC members and consider attending the Stand Up for Science event on 7 March.
  • Access career resources. SETAC is currently waiving job posting fees on the SETAC Career Center. Employers can post job openings for free to reach a highly skilled network. Resumes, fellowships and RFPs are always free to post.
  • Share your story. SETAC wants to hear how these issues impact you. Contact us at [email protected].
