Coalition of Environmental Advocates Across the U.S. Joins SETAC in Calling for Strong Support of Environmental Science and Management
A coalition of environmental advocates submitted formal letters to both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, urging support for policies that protect environmental and public health through science-informed decision-making. The coalition included 10 professional societies, representing thousands of U.S.-based scientists and advocates, three nonprofit organizations, and over a dozen businesses. The letter was also signed by around 500 individuals.
Under the current U.S. Administration, there is mounting concern over proposed policy changes that could undermine environmental protections, public health and science-based decision-making. The letter expresses concerns about actions that are being initiated that would weaken the U.S.’s support for environmental science through budget cuts, workforce reductions and executive actions resulting in dismantling of environmental regulations, cautioning that such measures will impair the U.S.’s ability to protect human and environmental health and harm the economy in the process.
The letters were sent to leaders of key congressional committees with jurisdiction over agencies that support environmental science and management, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), highlighting the critical role science plays in guiding effective environmentally protective legislation.
SETAC joins a growing number of scientific and environmental organizations taking part in similar outreach, reinforcing the message that environmental quality and public health depend on a robust foundation of scientific evidence.
