ET&C Calls for Papers: Textiles Microfibers and Chemicals and Applications of AI
Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (ET&C) is now accepting submissions for special issues focused on critical topics in environmental science.
ET&C Special Issue: Effects of Textiles Microfibers and Chemicals in the Environment
Guest Editor: Tamara Galloway
Submissions Due: 1 September 2025
The global textiles and fashion industry is a major source of environmental pollution and is growing rapidly; production of textiles has doubled over the last 20 years to exceed 100 million tonnes per annum. Throughout their life cycle, textiles produce 5–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions and consume the second-largest amount of the world’s water, whilst releasing polluting microfibers (synthetic, and anthropogenically altered natural fibers) and chemical agents (dyes, processing chemicals) into waterways during manufacture, use and disposal. A significant percentage of all the plastic in the oceans is accounted for by synthetic microfibers, threatening the environment and human health. We urgently need to improve understanding of the sources, distribution, fate, biological and ecological effects of microfibers and textiles-associated chemicals to support mitigation efforts. In this special series, we welcome papers that address these topics:
- How do we build a systematic understanding of the main fiber leakage points across different textile applications important to the global economy?
- What methods are needed to track fiber-based items and the microfibers they release through the waste stream and into the environment (air, soil, water)?
- What factors influence the ecotoxicology of microfibers (natural, anthropogenically modified, synthetic) and how can we study them?
- Can we design safer alternative materials, feedstocks, manufacturing and chemical processes to minimize environmental degradation and preserve natural resources?
Please see the instructions for authors for more details and submit your manuscript to the special issue “Textiles Microfibers and Chemicals” by 1 September 2025.
ET&C Special Issue: Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry
Guest Editors: Ralph Stahl, Jennifer Stauber and Ruth Hull
Submissions Due: 1 September 2025
We are seeking manuscripts that document or explore the role and influences (positive and negative) of artificial intelligence (AI) in environmental toxicology and chemistry. Manuscripts can include, but are not limited to:
- Examples of applying AI to the design or implementation of field or laboratory experiments;
- Analyzing pre-existing, large datasets;
- Chemical fate and effect;
- Interaction of chemicals or other stressors with climate change;
- Highlighting the high-power requirement for running the large computation centers that support AI;
- Informing or conducting probabilistic risk assessments and exploring correlative interactions (toxicity, chemical fate) among chemicals or metals of similar or dissimilar structure/mechanism of action.
Please see the instructions for authors for more details and submit your manuscript to the special issue “Applications of AI” by 1 September 2025.
